In the UK, a testosterone cream formulated specifically for women was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in August 2025. Before this, testosterone was not licensed for women, and male-strength gels were prescribed "off-label" in lower doses, as is currently the case in the US and elsewhere.
An FDA-convened panel of medical experts heard testimony in July 2025 supporting the removal of the black box warning from low-dose vaginal estrogen therapies. Experts argued that the warning, which dates to 2003, is inaccurate and scares women away from a safe and effective treatment for menopausal symptoms.

On August 12, 2025, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) made a historic decision by approving AndroFeme® Cream 10mg/ml, the first testosterone cream specifically licensed for postmenopausal women. This female-specific treatment targets hypoactive sexual desire dysfunction (HSDD), a condition marked by a persistent and distressing loss of libido. Affecting an estimated 6-13% of women in Europe, HSDD has long been an unmet need in women's healthcare. AndroFeme® is a body-identical hormone, mirroring the testosterone naturally produced by women, and is already licensed in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa (where it is known as TestaFeme®).
This approval is a major breakthrough in menopause care. For years, women in the UK with low testosterone levels had to rely on "off-label" prescriptions of testosterone products designed for men, which made accurate dosing challenging and carried a higher risk of side effects. The licensing of a product formulated specifically for women signals a shift toward more tailored, precise, and safe treatments. It acknowledges the vital role of testosterone in female health and provides a much-needed, regulated option for a condition that significantly impacts a woman's quality of life.
For women experiencing menopause or perimenopause, this new treatment offers a direct solution for low sexual desire, which is often a key symptom. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in the UK, testosterone replacement can be considered for women with low libido if hormone replacement therapy (HRT) alone has not been effective.
Beyond its primary use for HSDD, emerging research suggests that testosterone therapy may offer a range of other benefits for women. It can potentially help with:
While these benefits are not yet officially included in UK prescribing guidelines, the availability of a licensed product will facilitate greater discussion and research into its broader application.
AndroFeme® Cream is approved in the UK, but its launch is anticipated for 2026. Until then, women may still need to access it through private clinics under a special import license. The product is already available in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa (as TestaFeme®).
The main benefit of AndroFeme® is its proven ability to boost libido and improve sexual satisfaction for women with HSDD. Other reported benefits include improved energy, mood, and cognitive function.
While testosterone is generally considered safe when levels are kept within the physiological female range, potential side effects can occur, particularly if the dose is too high. The most common side effects are mild and may include a slight increase in facial or body hair and oily skin or acne. More serious side effects, such as hair thinning or a deepening of the voice, are rare. As with any topical medication, there is a small risk of transferring the cream to others through close skin-to-skin contact, so precautions like washing hands and covering the application area are recommended.
The next key event for UK women is the official launch of AndroFeme® in 2026. After its release, it will be important to monitor its availability on the NHS and to see if UK prescribing guidelines from organizations like NICE are updated to reflect the growing evidence for the wider benefits of testosterone in menopause care.
The approval of a licensed, female-specific testosterone cream is a truly exciting development. It's a testament to the growing recognition of women's health needs and provides a clear, regulated path for a life-changing treatment. We'll keep following this story so you'll know when new treatments like this become available.
